Famous Carnatic Composers - TKR


T.K. Rangacaari - (1912-1979) He began his training under Namakkal Narasimha Iyengar. He was in the first batch of students in the Sangita Bhushanam course at Annamalai university. Among his teachers were illustrious musicians like Ponniah Pillai (a descendant of the Tanjore Quartette) and Sabesa Iyer. He then taught at Annamalai university for several years. Among his contemporaries were Madurai Mani Iyer and GN Balasubramanian.

Vairamangalam Lakshminarayanan is one of his prominent disciples. During the later years of TKR's life, Lakshminarayanan used to sing with him a lot - including things like neraval and swarams. A legendary Carnatic vocalist, his daughter Mallika Jayanth Kumar and grandson D.B. Ashvin continue the tradition. Other disciples include Vidushi Neela Ramgopal. He won the prestigious Kala Bhushan award, among many others.
