1. NEW FEATURES

I try to have something new on the site each time -
and this time you'll see it's really worth spending a
chunk of time on the site. There
is a new karnATik quiz to take, an AMAZING searchable
database of lyrics, a what's new page, new features,
and other extras built into the existing pages.

a) karnATik quiz

You can test your knowledge of karnatik music on the
new quiz! If you've been reading your newsletters,
that will help too. Answer the 10 multiple choice
questions and immediately get your percentage
score and the correct answers. No cheating!
Did you pass?

b) NEW! Searchable database

If you always wanted to know the lyrics to songs
by Tyagaraja in mOhanam, or wondered which bhajans
we have words to, or want to know which composers
have songs in kaanaDaa, you can now search for them!

Our "beta" version of the searchable database is
online, updated with all 830 songs! You can search
for song name, raaga, composer, taaLa, the god or
goddess the song is about, the language the song was
composed in, and even select the type of song.

You can try the mini version on the main site (only
song name, raaga, and composer) or the full version
on the search page.

Check it out, and let me know what you love or want
improved!

c) What's new?

If you missed previous versions of the newsletter or
just want to know what the latest improvements to the
site are, you can find out on the all-new
What's New page. It lists all the great new things
I've added like the mailing list, minipolls, down-
loadable glossary, quiz, linked lyrics, and more.
New entries at the top. Come see what's new on
karnATik:

d) Less downtime. The high volume before was making
the site shut down every so often but you shouldn't be
having that problem anymore. Visit all you want!

e) Other stuff:

Searching the site - you can now search the site again,
a function which was not working properly before. Some
pages will be not covered so please flip through the
site or email me if you DON'T find what you're
looking for. The searches for my other sites (Tamil
Songs, Remedy Page, Royal Carpet) should be functional
soon as well.

Site Features - this time we feature two new links.

Chandrasekharan Venkatraman's page - biographies,
lyrics to OottukkaaDu songs, and songs by this amateur
composer.

Shaivism Website - lyrics to many Tamil and Sanskrit
scriptures, devotional songs, plus some audio, too.

3. TRIVIA ETC.

More trivia! This time the topic is "women in
Carnatic."
Tell me if there's something in particular
you'd like to see or a question
you want answered. Occasionally this space
may also have articles or other fun stuff. Let me
know if you have a contribution.

FROM LAST TIME: A reader commented that
ManipravaaLam is NOT simply Sanskrit and MalayaaLam,
but long was used primarily as Sanskrit and Tamil.
He writes: "The Vaishnava saints such as Swami Desikan,
Manavala maamuni periyavachan pillai, thirukkuragai piran,
have written many texts as a combination of
tamizh and sanskrit ... traditionally called
... manipravalam. These saints lived in 12th to 14th
century period." Thank you.

(Answers at the end)

1) Who was the first woman to be awarded the
Sangita Kalanidhi title?

4) Who are considered the Female Trinity of
Carnatic music?
