karnATik Singers - Subshri Mani

Subshri Mani is the daughter-in-law of D Pattamal and an accomplished musician in her own right. Trained Carnatic Musician with a Masters qualification in music, she presently manages her late husband’s business in India.

Hailing from a family of renowned musicians (Late Sangeetha Kalanidhi Sri. T. S. Sabesh Iyer is my grandfather) the affinity towards music was natural. Most of her childhood was spent in northern part of India which lent her the opportunity to gain exposure to other forms of music, which further enhanced my knowledge and career as a performing artist. Married into a musically oriented family, Late Kalaimamani Smt.D. Pattammal, author of several treatises on South Indian Classical music (Tamil Kritis), became her mother in law, and also her guru.

Today, she is the proud mother of 2 daughters, who have also been trained in classical music, who have settled with their chosen careers. She also teaches music.

Her Education includes a Bachelor of Arts (Indian Music); graduated with I class from the University of Madras, India, then Sangeetha Alankar, Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, Madhya Pradesh. She also has a Master of Arts (Indian Music); graduated with I class from the University of Madras, India. She has been a Student of Sangeetha Kalanidhi Sri.T.K.Govinda Rao, for the last 40 years, since the age of 5. She learnt Varnams and Tillanas under Padmabhushan Lalgudi. Sri.G. Jayaraman. Received junior fellowship from the Ministry of Culture, New Delhi to undertake a detailed study of the same, then learnt Ragam-Tanam-Pallavi & Javalis under Prof.T.R.Subramanian. She was Granted a Scholarship by Ministry of Culture, New Delhi for a period of 2 years for training under Sri.T.K.Govinda Rao and Smt. D.Pattammal.

She has performed as a professional musician since 1977, and is now a certified B-high grade All India Radio artist (since 1980). She was selected as “the best state artist for the year 78-79” by Tamil Nadu Eyal Isai Nadaka Mandram, Government of Tamil Nadu and was selected by Rotary International as “Culture Ambassador” to USA in 1988. She received the title of “Perumpana Nangai” by Naadugaan Kuzhu, Lalgudi in 2000 for expertise in rendition of Tamil krithis. She has also won various prizes around India for her musical prowess.
